Improving Literacy

Having been running the programme several years, we had a review in 2006 and decided to restrict the programme in Villages where SHGs demand the centres. In 2006-07, four centres were organized in four villages ( Nalur & Thoppuma Nagar in Minjur and Mallian Kuppam & Kottaimedu in Sholavaram ). In all there were 63 learners.

We drafted the services of Suguna of Inam Agaram who ran the centre so well in her village and won accolade in the presence of President of India in 2005. She has trained the instructors identified by field staff and is visiting the centres regularly, supported by Gomathi , Programme Associate who monitors the overall programme. Slates and education materials are provided to the learners. TCS visitors from United States and Sri Lanka who visited the Literacy centres in February, 2007 were impressed by the programme.
