| Movement for Gram Panchayat Self – Governance (A federation of Gram Panchayat Presidents)

The state level Association
of village panchayat presidents has been
registered with the name “ Grama Suyasarbu Iyakkam (GSI) in Nov , 2009.
Registered under Tamilnadu Societies’ registration ACT,1975,
GSI has representation from 18 districts. Efforts are underway to get representation from other 13 districts
(barring Chennai). GSI has been
spearheaded by CRUSADE in the North and DAC Trust in the South with a host of
other NGOs in the district. GSI aims to lobby the state for devolving more powers and funds and for decentralized governance
through grassroots level planning and implementation of schemes for economic
development and social justice.. The state level
registered body will have two
representatives from each districts ( including Dahit and women) and enlist two /three representation from supporting NGOs.
The district level branch will admit members (village presidents) at district
level. The first General Body the registered body was held in Madurai on 28th March, 2010.
